Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium celebrates a Summer of Sound

With the summer holidays well and truly underway, Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium is making all the right noises with its Summer of Sound activities programme.SummerofSoundWinchester

Running daily until 4 September, from 10am to 5pm, the Science Centre will be exploring all things sound; amazing visitors with the power and secrets of audio and creating marvels with soundwave visualisations. Winchester Science Centre has even transformed its outside space into a specially designed festival lawn. Complete with colourful flags and exhibition tents, open air activities are available daily between 11am – 4.30pm.

A truly explosive experience is in store for visitors who watch Hot Sounds, as Dr Ben Littlefield and his fantastic education team demonstrates sound through the use of heat and fire. Whilst outside, the presenter led workshop The Science of Sound provides an interactive journey into what sound actually is, with exciting demonstrations and plenty of audience participation.

On the other side of the lawn, the University of Southampton has loaned the Science Centre a giant 5ft Singing Dragon Bowl to demonstrate the secrets of the Ancient Chinese and their mastery of sound through dancing water droplets.

In the event of bad weather, activities will be moved indoors alongside the Science Centre’s science buskers, who will be showing off the more advanced and unusual applications of sound such as levitating objects using Ulrasound and showcasing current cutting-edge research from the University of Southampton.

Visitors can also pay a visit to the UK’s largest standalone Planetarium with a variety of shows available each week, including Dinosaurs at Dusk – the story of a teenage girl and her father who explore the past to discover the evolution of dinosaurs. For younger visitors, the live show Twinkle Twinkle provides the chance to go stargazing without staying up past bedtime.

And if that wasn’t enough, visitors can get hands-on with over 100 interactive exhibits, including the Science Centre’s Little Big Room and the Science of Sport Zone.

WinchesterScienceCenterBen Ward, Director at Winchester Science Centre, said: “Summer has already got off to a busy start here at Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium, where we are really exploring and experimenting with everything audio. It’s been fantastic to see all of our visitors getting hands-on with our interactive exhibits, watching our live shows and taking part in our presenter led workshops, proving that learning really can be fun.”

All activities (excluding Planetarium shows) are free with General Entry to the Science Centre and there is no charge for parking during the 2016 summer holidays. Visitors should be aware that some activities are weather-dependent and that not all can be guaranteed on any particular day.  Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium is South England’s leading hands-on, interactive, science and technology centre with the largest standalone planetarium in the UK. The Science Centre is a self-funded, independent educational charity and relies on Gift Aid and visitor donations to stay open seven days a week.
Online booking discount available on general entry. To book, visit www.winchestersciencecentre.org or call 01962 863791.
